AS IF WE EVER HAD ANY DOUBT THAT THE TRUSTEES SUPPORT MARTIN
MARIETTA, NOT ANDERSON TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS …
We had hoped that the Township would not side with Martin
Marietta in the pending appeal. In fact,
on more than one occasion the township administrator assured CABOOM members and
the news media that Martin Marietta was on its own in appealing Judge
Ruehlman’s reversal of the Board of Zoning Appeals’ approval of Martin
Marietta’s plans for a major underground mining operation. But, the Township Trustees have filed a 35
page brief supporting Martin Marietta’s appeal!
Apparently, there’s very little trust left in the word “trustee.”In their brief filed on May 15, the Trustees started out
by saying they had “decided not to file an appeal from the trial court’s
decision… and not to take a position on whether Martin Mareitta should be
allowed to establish its proposed underground mine….” They then devoted the balance of their brief
by arguing aggressively for a reversal of Judge Ruehlman’s decision in favor of
township residents and for reinstatement of the BZA’s 3 to 2 vote in favor of
Martin Marietta. When CABOOM leader
Cathy Burger confronted the trustees at their next meeting, unmoved by Cathy’s
expression of disappointment, one trustee had the nerve to respond that their
brief says they are taking no position.
But, their written brief sends a clear message to the Court of Appeals
that the Trustees support Martin Marietta, not the people of Anderson Township.
CABOOM urges all
Anderson Township residents to write to the Trustees to express their
disappointment that our tax money is being used not to protect our homes and
businesses from the unwanted mine, but to actually thwart our efforts to
protect our community. Remind them that
their betrayal will not be forgotten at the next township election.
